The theme on the box says, “Winter Wonderland,” but the underlying theme could also be vibrant diversity. The 500-piece puzzle by Galison features kids of color - a demographic that is rarely seen in mainstream puzzles - frolicking in this charming holiday tableau. If you are a parent to kids of color, or just a puzzler concerned about the representation of other communities in this great American pastime, the Galison line - which also includes the richly illustrated “Cuba” - warrants a closer look.
Several key elements make this an excellent novice puzzler project: the four candy-colored houses, the brick pathway, Santa’s reindeer-led sleigh across a star-lit sky, and the multicolored Christmas tree. Each element can be grouped and built out separately before assembling into the whole. The large, 1½” x 1”, sturdy pieces (they feel like lightweight metal) are easy to grip and place and I believe children younger than the target age range of 10 years plus could work this puzzle, too. A major drawback to this puzzle, though, is that except for the border pieces, all the pieces are cut exactly the same way (see pic). That uniformity makes this a boring puzzling experience. It also makes it harder to work since only color and not shape guides your selection.
“Winter Wonderland” celebrates winter fun, community, and a season of joy. The diversity in theme is sadly offset by the uniformity of puzzle pieces giving this product a 3-star rating.
