My first desktop mic boom was the slightly more expensive Proline model at about $31. I'm very happy with it. When I needed to add another I thought I would try a brand that was nearly half the price of the Proline just for comparison, but it was out of stock. I saw this Samson MB1 and liked the reviews so decided to give it a try.
I actually like it a little more than the Proline. Setting aside the $6 price advantage of the Samson, it stacks up very well in every category. In fact, it is better in some areas. At its lowest setting, it is nearly 4" taller than the Proline, even before extending the height (attached comparison photo has a bit of perspective shift but I measured the height difference at the pivot point). The movable boom arm can also be telescoped to nearly double its length (with the caveat that depending on how far you extend it, the weight of your mic, and how you position the base, you may need a counterweight to prevent tipping). Fit and finish of the components are great. Even the packaging was attractive and made me anticipate a quality product inside.
My mobile studio gear is now complete (ha, who am I kidding). I am very happy with this Samson MB1 purchase.
