Worth the upgrade!

My daughter's favorite reed, by far. She loves the french file on these and they are worth the couple extra dollars a box over the Rico basics. She also prefers the Royals to the Vandorens. Note: she advised that once she picked these up she no longer had any trouble hitting higher notes. She has also gotten a number of her band mates hooked on this brand...

consistent reeds pack after pack

I'm an intermediate player using a Buffet E11 clarinet. I started playing again two years ago after decades of inactivity. As part of my reintroduction I did a major reed study, including various flavors of Van Doren and Rico reeds, starting with the former. I play #3-1/2 reeds. The Van Dorens (56s for example) consistently require substantial left-right balancing, and up to 1/3 of the reeds in a box may not be useful. The Rico Royal reeds are a delightful contrast that I did not anticipate given that this was my student brand decades ago. I have never had to balance a Royal reed. I find more than 9/10 on average are useful, and most of those are efficient and pleasing to play. Given the different fractions of useful reeds the Van Dorens are about twice the price.

I am new to the clarinet, coming very late to the game as a "senior" adult learner. In desperation over my squeaking and squawking, and my difficulty just getting sound to come out, my teacher suggested I try the Rico Royal line, and I noticed an improvement immediately. Maybe it's coincidence, maybe it's in my head, but I DO think these are better-quality reeds. I also appreciated being able to order a 3-pack to try before investing in a 10-pack. They are worth the money, and I will buy again.

I'm a sometime professional, mostly hobbyist. Why pay more? That is the bottom line. I've tried a lot of brands and while Rico Royals may not go 10 for 10 in a box without some sanding, they are as close as any others. And they are still the most affordable reeds around. If you're looking for a consistent, well made reed, this is the place to start. No question.

Been a fan of the Rico brand reeds since my son started playing clarinet this year but then I the Rico Royals and noticed a big difference. The music store tried to sell me on these when we first got the clarinet but I thought it was just up-selling. Now I know I was wrong because they are so worth the little bit of extra money. My son is having an easier time with the clarinet as well.
