I bought this shaving set as a Valentine's gift for my husband. He was introduced to wet shaving last year by a friend and he loves the effect of using the brush and soap. When my husband saw the $100 draft from our account to Amazon, he naturally wanted to know what I had bought. Unable to contain his excitement, we opened the box together as soon as it arrived. Our initial impression was that the box had been previously opened. The box lid was torn and a piece of scotch tape was holding the lid shut. The inside of the box appeared to have not been disturbed and was well wrapped. The brush, razor, and stand had a good weight to them. Both the brush and razor are stamped with the Edwin Jagger logo in silver ink. The stamp on the razor was smudged; I would have expected a defect such as this to have been detected and removed, nevertheless, that is the way we received it. My husband said he liked the gift, but I think in the back of his mind he was thinking, "You spent 100 bucks for this?" I am not opposed to paying for good quality, but this set was a bit of a disappointment; it is after all a composite plastic. We have yet to see how well the bristles will hold up and how well the metal will handle being exposed to water. To be honest, I don't know what a fair price for this set would be and I have never heard of Edwin Jagger before. If this was a matter of paying for the label, then the least they could have done was to have printed their label well.

I was slightly aghast that my wife spent this much on a shaving set for me, but now I will never look back. I have used multiple cheaper (but still badger fur) brushes, and this one is a real winner.

Another reviewer notes that the brush feels somewhat "thin" when wet, as if it's not holding enough water/soap. I had this fear my first time as well, but then I discovered that it performs some kind of miracle of physics to deploy a massive amount of lather in very little time. I think the bristles are a bit longer than other brushes I have used, and this somehow helps create lather super efficiently.

I was surprised how much I liked the razor. Frankly the whole "set" thing seemed a little precious, but it's actually great to have a weighty, substantive handle, and having everything hang neatly in the stand is a big step up from your typical Gillette plastic tray.

I will echo the warning of another reviewer about the smell. I don't know for sure what a badger smells like, but I'm fairly sure I got a sense of it the first couple times I got the brush wet. If I didn't like the whole set so damn much I would take off a point for that, but it fades quickly, and for all I know that's the secret to how they created such an impeccable brush, so I am not going to question it.

Firstly, I bought this set for the stand and the brush. I will not be using the razor.
The stand is good and solid with smooth edges and a good weight for stability, but I'm going to be picky and subtract a star because the stand I received has a smooth base instead of the 'ripple in a pond' pattern that is evident in the picture. I wanted that particular look because most shaving stands appear so cheap. This is still much nicer than those.
The brush is great with a nice weight and feel. The bristles are smooth and even without a bunch of stragglers. Rinse it out and hang it to dry and it should stay in great shape for many years. Just don't sniff it before you load it with soap a few times unless you want to know what a badger smells like.

It's high quality, solid construction, with beautifull nickel plated finish and glossy black handles. The badger hair brush is soft (my first). A few strands of hair had fallen out on several occasions (single strands), but I would expect that to be normal wear and tear with regular use. The "March III" blade cartridge holder/connector is plastic. I wonder how long that will last? And, when it breaks, will there be a simple part replacement? Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. Makes a beautifull display piece in ones bathroom (when not in use).

4 out of 5 stars... For the plastic parts. Overall, ...works well.

I like the razor

This is my first experience with Edwin Jagger. I like the razor, it is well-balanced and simply feels good in my hand. It's the brush I hate. This brush is a joke, it is thin, it doesn't hold water so to speak. Every time I use it it sends white blobs in all directions. I cannot imagine how this brush found its way into an otherwise high end line of products. Wake up, Edwin Jagger, you just lost a customer.
