I Had to Return It But You Want to Hear Why

This is an Audio-Technica (AT) customer service report more than a review of the headshell. I bought my LP120 in 2013, and recently moved the turntable from one floor to the Family Room home theater system. Apparently, in transit, one of the wires in the headshell pulled away from the cartridge. The tiny connector holding the wire to the cartridge fell off and disappeared. First I tried to find a connector replacement, and was steered to something by an Amazon tech. I ordered it and it was completely the wrong type of connector. So at this point I ordered a new headshell replacement (and also a new cartridge to replace the needle, which I believed was also damaged in the move. NB the needle can be replaced without replacing the cartridge but the savings is small). After I placed the order I thought to call AT customer service to explain what had happened. I was still hoping to get the connector I needed. AT customer service said to my shock that AT would send me a new headshell. When I said that I was sure the (six year old) turntable and headshell were out of warranty, the reply was that it was not a problem. A few days later the free replacement headshell arrived from AT. When I opened the package, I saw that not only did AT send me a headshell but the headshell included a new cartridge and stylus. WOW! So, I returned the headshell and cartridge to Amazon, and was out the return shipping costs. Gladly.

I bought this shell when I upgraded my Audio Technica AT-120LP turntable with a new Audio Technica VM740ML cartridge. The shell and cartridge are made for each other, and the installation was simple and the shell attaches perfectly to the tone arm of the turntable. I preferred to have both my old cartridge and my new one in separate shells so I can interchange them easily if I wish. If you wish to, or need to, replace the cartridge on your AT turntable, I recommend you get one of these for each cartridge you own and wish to be able to use again.

Not recommended, won’t fit many carts!

CANNOT recommend this shell. Sturdy, heavy, pretty, but one major flaw. The major issue I had with this is it’s just too darn short. Longer and/or vintage Audio Technica carts will probably have issues fitting well, audiophile and cart junkies beware.

Good real-world example of this is my vintage TK7SU cart (pictured) which, as you can see, even adjusted all the way back, the top of the cart juts out past the overhang. You would think if I’m paying almost $50 for a headshell, the manufacturer would design it to fit their own high-end carts! It tells me they either consider this a low-end headshell or don’t care to serve their customers who prefer their classic carts. Either way, it’s not worth the price point.

I’m tempted to return it but I think I may have a stubbier AT cart to use it with, looks like the AT12 or AT95 May be a good pairing. Honestly, for a much better value, good mid-weight unit, I feel the ADJ shell sold here on Amazon is a far superior cart and at a fraction of the price and I’d rather buy two or three of those than one of these for the same price. The ADJ shell is not nearly as modern looking, but I think choosing fancy over function to be a bit dense. YMMV!
