All the features of this pencil make it worth the price! It's a pencil that you don't have to feel too guilty about if you lose it... I know I would freak out if I lost a $30+ pencil.
Some notes though:
The clicker function of this pencil operates much like a camera; when you press down half way on the shutter button, it will focus. When you press down all the way, the camera will take the photo. Like a camera, this pencil's eraser can be pressed half way down to utilize the cushioned sleeve function. If you press down all the way, the lead sleeve will lock.
Cushioned sleeve function (half press):
The lead will come out and the pencil also retracts easily. This is the best function to use if you constantly retract the pencil, in my opinion. To retract, press the tip lightly so that after the lead goes up, the sleeve still has a little pressure; then lighten up the pressure on the clicker, but push down on the body of the pencil. Since the sleeve is cushioned, it slides back up when you reduce the pressure on the clicker but the pressure remains on the body. If you put pressure on both, it will not retract. It took me awhile to get the hang of it since this is my first pencil that is cushioned. This function is also nicer for heavy handed writers and for those who break the lead a lot. You can test the cushioning by pressing the top down and using various amounts of pressure; just make sure you don't have any lead exposed if you want to really to see how it works. If you press very hard, you can still break the lead. It's really a nice feature!
Locked sleeve ( clicker pressed down fully.)
You will know it's locked when you see an orange guide that sits over the thin metal sleeve. Not much of the orange becomes exposed, so you might not even notice it unless you pay attention. At first, mine was ridiculously hard to retract when the sleeve was in the locked position. I have metal tin to prove it! I would use something other than paper to retract it. After about 30 times, it does get easier though. I typically avoid locking the pencil because I like the cushioning feature. I'm also afraid of breaking it.
The only way to make this pencil better would be to offer this exact mechanism with a full metal body and a lead grade indicator (there's only one pencil that I know of that is retractable and has a lead type indicator. It's not cushioned though.) I don't know about you, but I would totally spend $40+ on a metal version of this pencil that functions exactly the same way! (Meaning it would have to be a cushioned/sliding type and not just retractable.) There is a metal body pencil that is cushioned/sliding sleeve and retractable, but the Staedtler's Marsmicro mechanism is SOLID, even if it is just plastic!
There is no side to side wiggle. Other retractable pencils are said to have play, but this one does not. Honestly, I'm light handed so I don't notice the play in pencils, but I can tell that this pencil has the most solid retracting system. Watch this pencil and compare it to others when you click out lead and retract it back into the body. You'll see what I mean.
