I reached out to customer service to see if something can be done, and they completely avoided the issue with the flouride still in the water, and then basically insisted that the pH really is different but that I have to spend a lot more money on a much more expensive form of testing (that i obviously wouldn't get reimbursed for) in order to see the results. They just left it at that. He said i can return it if it is still within 30 days, but that is all they will do. He did not offer any troubleshooting suggestions to try to make the product work. My time limit to return it is up. It took me 30 days to test the product two different times in order to see that it doesn't work. I, of course, am out the $35 that it cost for the testing supplies as well, in addition to losing the $200 I spent on this product.
When contacted for customer service, the company completely avoided major parts of my question, tried to get me to spend more money on more tests (that cannot be refunded) and offered no realistic options for returning the product. They are not accepting any responsibility and are being completely uncooperative, leaving me with a loss of over $200.
I tried to give this 0 stars, but it won't register that way, so i had to give it 1. It really should get negative stars because of the hassle and extra expenses involved.
Update: customer service did respond again. They just emailed me a picture of tests on the water saying that their tests show that the product works. They stated that they just tested the same water and were able to get 95% reduction for lead and flouride. That is completely ridiculous. The water from the unti on my countertop does not have any reduction in flouride or lead. They dont even know how to resolve that. They just insist that it really does when it definitely does not. They count on customers not being able to test for accuracy.
Update (again): i am glad that I purchased this product through Amazon and not directly from santevia. The customer service representatives at santevia were avoiding my questions and were completely unwilling to take any steps to resolve or even address the issue. It was more than 30 days after i received the product that i realized it is ineffective, so i could not even return it to them anymore. I would have had to take the loss on the product and also the additional expenses for testing supplies. When i called and explained the situation to a representative at Amazon, they were willing to refund to me the cost of the product and the cost of testing supplies that were ordered through Amazon and were willing to take things up with santevia themselves. If I had ordered this product any other way I would have lost all of that money, so I am grateful that Amazon was willing to step up and take responsibility and make the effort to resolve the issue when santevia was completely uncooperative.
Filtered it, ran it through reverse osmosis, and still of course had the acid component.
I'm talking acidic enough to etch tooth enamel...
Experimented with several alkaline technologies.
You have the super expensive countertop alkalizers that use electricity, various devices like the Santevia system, and of course simply buying water, if you happen to be rich and need a good workout hauling the gallon a day we're all supposed to drink...
Alkaline water, if you buy it, is at least a couple bucks a gallon. A gallon weighs 8 pounds. At a gallon a person a day, we're talking a family of four needs 28 gallons a week and it weighs 224 pounds and costs $56...
In 6 months, you'd haul 5824 pounds of water, and spend $1456 to buy it, not counting time and gasoline or shipping...
The Santevia will create that much water for you, and at most need about $60 in supplies in the same 6 months.
For our purposes, we use the Santevia system. Brings our extremely acidic city water up to somewhat alkaline, does it without electricity, and gets other trace minerals into it as well.
No, it doesn't take out fluoride - as others have pointed out - but Santevia has a system that does, based on reverse osmosis. I haven't tried it but I have added a mineral cartridge to our reverse osmosis system...
Knowing what I know today, I'd recommend first using any good reverse osmosis system ahead of the counter top unit if your water has contaminants in it like fluoride, and then pour the result into the Santevia counter top unit, because mineral cartridges in the reverse units only get a quick single pass for the water and don't alkalize uniformly or well. The counter top unit is slower and alkalizes more thoroughly, the process takes time...
Where I'm coming from in terms of "water beliefs":
There's ph, ionization, and actual alkaline content at issue with units of these kinds. People believe different things...
Personally, I believe alkalinity and ph are the main important factors, as this has a demonstrable effect on human mineral balance and therefore human biochemistry.
Makes and maintains a few gallons of alkaline water with little pain and little ongoing cost.
Filters most contaminants, bacteria, parasites, and pesticides.
I would not trust it or any other consumer grade filter to filter unsafe drinking water, and they don't claim it will.
Doesn't take out fluoride. Then again, they never said it did...
You do need to pull maintenance on it every 6 months.
Why not 5 stars?
A few small gripes, considering the cost of the system:
The unit is heavy plastic, would rather have seen glass.
The advertised ph is 8.5, but our HIGHLY acidic water can't seem to get up to 8.5, more like 7.2 to 7.7
The tub on ours had a rough spot on the hole for the spout, needed to smooth the plastic so it would not leak.
Summary: Good and affordable alkaline water, uses no electricity, and the process is natural...
Update: Still working fine. I had a few questions about our low ph for their customer service. Found them to be unresponsive and failed to send me information that they promised me. Don't hold your breath waiting for them...
