You don't need to mess with all the network settings in the app - you can if you like, but it is not necessary. The trick to get a reliable connection is to put your iPhone into airplane mode (thereby eliminating all forms of potential network interference) and then enable ONLY the wifi connection to the camera. Do this and everything will work just fine. When you are done, simply disable airplane mode and all your original settings will be in place again and you can go on your merry way.
As for all the other network settings in the app:
Renaming the network is probably smart if you don't want to advertise that you have an expensive Nikon in the vicinity. Password protecting the network may be overkill, but it can't hurt. You really don't need to touch anything else.
-1 Star to +3 maybe!
3 ½ star depending on what mode it is in.
The low ratings on this device cover most of my complaints.
Hard to keep Wi-Fi locked up between camera and I-Thing [Signal Strength to weak].
Live view and remote almost useless. [any signal fad and all STOP]
Down Load takes too long. [I think the whole file is being transferred.]
Image size to down load not really adjustable. [VGA does not download any faster]
If you want to view photos in camera and select them to down load then this feature is for you.
I seems to work OK as long as the Nikon & I -Thing are sitting in your lap. This is really handy if you are using a big Nikon Telephoto lens of your Little League Pitcher on the mound throwing a strike.
You can quickly transfer the image to the I-phone and send it on to the family as a text photo.
Overall I am disappointed with NIKON, this WU-1a has been around since 2012 and as near as I can tell no effort has been made to Up Grade the Software, Firmware or the the device its self.
I read the reviews and was warned so my fault.
But I will keep it.
I haven't tried using the "take photos" feature from the app, so I can't comment on how good or bad that is--I have a timer and a remote thing that I use instead. Don't you love how knowledgeable I am about proper terminology?
Anyway, for the download function alone, I've had pretty good success using this little device while I work within the parameters above.
I was excited to receive my adapter and was very optimistic about using it. However after using it for a few hours this morning I have had nothing but problems. I followed the instructions to the letter (which is unusual for me) and everything would be working smoothly then it would disconnect. I wasn’t able to do something as simple as download 8 pictures to my iPad. The device and iPad disconnected too many times for me to keep track of during the time I used it.
I then tried the remote camera function. There was a definite lag in shutter response time and several times the app froze entirely. I was able to capture one image with it (that was clear) before becoming so utterly frustrated that I removed it from my camera and put it back in it’s packaging.
I am very disappointed in the quality of this product and will be returning it. I hate to return a thoughtful gift but this product didn’t work at all for me. It’s possible it may work better with non IOS products but I have no way of knowing. I would look at other options if you’re interested.
