Hanabi is my favorite boardgame this year. I have given out more than half a dozen copies, in the TILE version that is much more satisfying to play than the card version.
What makes the game great: This game teaches/requires: logic, empathy, teamwork, and communication. It's incredible that way.
A warning: It is easy to play this game badly. It also is easy to cheat in this game. The best way to avoid both is to play first with someone who already knows how to play and can clearly--and patiently--explain not only the basics but also the deeper aspects like finesses and bluffs.
A note on TILE versus CARD: If at all possible, play this game using a tile version instead of the cards, because then you don't have to hold them in your hand or try to use a cardholder. You also can use a playing mat with a grid showing colors and numbers in columns and rows, to help you keep track of what you know about tiles in your hand. Some purists say that's cheating, but my response is that the game rules say it is a game of communication and non-communication; they don't say anything about it being a game of memory!
A note on the 2 tile versions: This tile version comes from Germany and has instructions only in German, but you can find and download English instructions easily enough. The other tile version is the big blue box which costs $299 when it's not in stock otherwise; its tiles also are not etched/engraved so the paint can get worn off the tiles. The only downside to the German engraved+painted tiles is that you have to be careful when pulling them from the pile not to touch their faces, otherwise you will get a subliminal clue about the number through your fingertips. :)
Enjoy!
