This box works well and would get 4 or even 5 stars, but the USB power cable is very cheaply made. After one month the cable began to show itself unreliable where the slightest movement causes the box to loose power.

I must say that I am thoroughly impressed with the seller of this item! Their support should be a model and example to others. They made good on the faulty USB power cable where everything is now working perfectly. Thank you so much for taking the time to care about one customer. I look forward to continued business with you.

Works well enough, but audio is reversed

I bought this DAC to use my XBox One's digital optical output with my speaker system that has 3.5mm analog inputs. I had previously tried to use Goronya Digital to Analog Audio Converter, Digital Coax and Optical Toslink to Analog Audio Converter Adapter--Changes Digital Coaxial or Optical SPDIF into Stereo 3.5mm Jack or L/R RCA Audio Output , but found that certain sound effects in games caused a distinct crackling or clipping sound which was very annoying. Two different units both had the same problem, so I believe it is just poor hardware. I then tried Insignia Optical/Coaxial Digital-to-Analog Converter - Black which I had bought from a home theater store while trying to get everything set up; this DAC did not have the audio clipping, but as soon as it stopped receiving an optical signal, i.e. when the XBox was powered down, it began causing horrible popping and crackling sounds to come out of the speakers.

Still not wanting to spend a huge amount of money for a DAC, I opted for this model, specifically due to the USB power supply which I could turn off at my USB hub. I'm happy to report that it seems to work well thus far in my testing, neither causing clipping during the same sound effects that caused it with the other DAC, nor crackling and popping, even with the power supply remaining on (I did hear a faint buzzing/ticking sound once shortly after powering my console off, but that was it...far quieter, and only briefly as compared to the Insignia DAC issue).

The reason I knocked a star off is that the audio output is reversed from right to left. I compared the DAC I received to the product photos and confirmed that it is the same (red/white are not reversed in position), but they are definitely backwards, easily confirmed with a "left and right speaker test" video. I have the same speakers connected to my XBox 360 and to my PC, and the problem was isolated to the XBox One with this DAC. Flipping the cables fixed the problem.

I will report back if I encounter any issues with this device. I realize it is an inexpensive and simple piece of hardware, but the "higher end" DAC's are significantly more expensive, and others in this price range don't always work correctly, as I have described, which can make a fun AV setup turn into a major headache.

Good Cheap (price, NOT quality) DAC for TVs that only have digital output

May 2020 update: in mid March the toslink cable near the end that was attached to my TV's plastic sort of (best way to describe it ... not as extreme as it MAY sound) sort of melted a bit and got stuck (it was already not working at that point) ... trying to pry it out with needle-nose plyers I ended up breaking the cable (again it was already not working) ... I just got a replacement cable today and it's much better quality and i can 100% report the DAC still works perfectly fine... so the toslink cable heating up/not being the best quality LONG TERM MAY be an issue ... if you already have another toslink cable or go buy one ... you're good to go ... I still recommend the DAC itself

I was looking for a way to get the audio out from my new TV which only has digital audio out to be in a form where I could use existing cables with either RCA (Red and White) or 3.5mm headphone style jacks, depending on what existing speakers I choose to use at the time. So far I am very impressed. With this device I can even plug in the speakers, and say have them across the room AND (this may be specific to my TV) still have the regular audio output from My TV going at the same time, which I admit isn't that great.

I admit I am a techie kind of guy but really this device and the setup isn't too complicated. A) Remember to take off the plastic tabs as others have said or the digital cable will not go into either your device or the DAC. I have this plugged into a powered hub (note: UNPLUGGED) that is attached to my TV's USB connector and there is no problem getting power to this DAC.

The ONE downside that I see so far is that this is VERY LOUD if you plug regular headphones into this device ... like when you hear a stereo that has "clearly been turned up too much" and things sound not only loud but distorted. IF YOUR headphones or speakers have a volume control on them (I did test an old pair of wireless RCA Headphones, connected via 3.5mm to this DAC) ... then that solves this issue I just mentioned. There may be another fix, but I haven't found it yet. The volume button on the TV seems to only control the TV's volume and ... basically I have seen DACs that do have a volume control ON them and getting a DAC with this volume control built into a knob on it may be what you want if this sounds like a use case that would effect you.

Like I said, If your planning to use this with a pair of speakers/headphones/a recevier with volume controls, than this one Con I see so far doesn't apply to you. Still ... even for that use case and it was one of the ones I had .... This is a minor hiccup ... no big deal.

The build quality seems fairly good though I admit even if i did somehow open this DAC up to see the insides/circuitry, I wouldn't have a clue what I am looking at. What I want to get at is "this DOESN'T 'seem cheap' ".

In certain use cases, I'd say look elsewhere (see the bulk of this review for what I mean) but other than that ... I'd 100% recommend this DAC

Just what I needed for my 20+ year old amp/tuner

After purchasing a new TV over the holidays I noticed the only out was a digital optical cable which my 20+ year old Onkyo didn't accept. With a unit that old the only inputs were 3.5 mm RCA and I didn't want to scrap my Dolby 5.1 amp/tuner and speakers that have served me so well. Instead of investing $200 in a new sound bar or $600 for a new amp I thought I'd give this a shot.

This eSynic Digital to Analog Audio Converter is exactly what I needed. I was uncertain if the new system (tv digital out, to converter, to Dolby amp/tuner) would differentiate between the channels. I don't run rear speakers, but there is a clear left, right and center channel which is everything that I had hoped for.

The unit is really small (see picture with standard playing card) and lite. The usb cord feels cheap and doesn't come with the electric plug attachment, but honestly who doesn't have a dozen usb plugs hanging around.

Item does not work. Produces a loud stuttering static sound. Seller does not honor returns. Terrible. Will not buy from them again.
