I try to like Brunton baseplate compasses, I really do. Thought this would be a winning upgrade/modification of the TruArc3 (no median lines on bezel), but alas. The baseplate of the TruArc5 is just to large for my liking. Silva and especially Suunto rarely disappoint.

"Tool less" declination adjustment could use a tool

Forget the included instructions on making a declination adjustment, one of the most clumsy descriptions I can remember reading. What they needed to say was that the compass cartridge must be turned relative to the surrounding black ring, and you are supposed to do that by pinching the cartridge with the thumb and forefinger of one hand while holding the black ring grip with the other hand, turning the two in opposite directions.

On my compass, the fitting is too tight to budge without considerable struggle and pain. I'm up to 11 degrees east declination, need to attain nearly 14 degrees, can't get there. My hands are cramping, my fingertips are raw, and I'm wishing for a tool to budge this tool-less design.

The idea only works if the manufacturing tolerances prevent excessive friction that can't be overcome without leverage. I think pliers would cause damage. The compass cartridge simply fits too tight in its housing.

Furthermore, the declination scale on the bottom is visible only because there is a white plastic backing on the underside of the cartridge. When you try to make the adjustment this backing is wrenched from its position, and you discover that it is kept in place by suction adhesion, easily peeling off. But if you need to adjust the declination for some other location, besides having to struggle again, you will need to keep track of this backing and hope it doesn't fall off, or you won't be able to see the declination scale.

UPDATE: I returned the product to Amazon and promptly got a replacement. The declination adjustment felt as tight as before, but it would budge. I can understand the need for a tight fit so the adjustment won't loosen. It's a struggle and you can't see what you are doing while using considerable force with two enclosing hands, but eventually you can get it adjusted. Added a star because I bought this compass wanting to like it.

Overall: worth it.

Adjusting declination on this is NOT as hard as people make it out to be. Compass is sturdy. Pinch and turn the grey rubber edge of the compass and the declination can be adjusted with a reasonable amount of force. Anyone breaking out pliers is probably not doing it right.

Agree the white label on the declination readings might come off in the field, but no need to remove it to adjust.

Needle has good vibration dampening.

Mine works great. No issue at all with the declination adjustment like other reviews. Press full pad of your thumb on the face, and the tip of your middle finger on the bottom in the center. Pinch and turn. You can actually turn mine by just pushing with your thumb and turning. There were no instructions but 10 sec on you tube fixed that. Great compass for the price.
