It is difficult for me to write. I use it to record notes to my self when I'm driving or to record several todo items when they come to me in a flash. Then I can sit down and write out my list later. I've used these for years.

I purchased the identical product over six years ago - this rating is based on that recorder. I use it primarily to record my Sunday sermons which I upload to a web page. About a month ago, the USB connector gave signs of internally failing - the device was not recognized by the computer. After some insertions, finally was able to get it to work. A call to Olympus tech said this is the usual mode of failure. Fortunately, was able to work long enough to download the previous years messages still on internal storage to computer. I then began to record to the Micro SD card until I received the new one and transfer from card to my PC, etc. I could just keep using in this mode except for the bother of moving card in and out each week. That leads to first suggestion - would be a nice feature if could transfer on the recorder from internal storage to SD card. Also, the recorder does not recognize a card with storage over the 32 GB - no big deal. Would also like it to have a back lit screen - it does not. The menus, if you don't change settings often, are a little onerous, but has good instruction. (Thus the 4 star for easy to use - it ain't rocket science though) Since I set the recording feature for close up recording, I usually keep in my shirt pocket, I don't know how well the other conference settings work in record mode. One other good feature is the option to record on one of five folders. All in all, a great device with good bang for the buck. I will give the old device which should have many years of service left to someone else to use with proviso to record on card . Another suggestion to extend life of USB connector as I am now doing is to use a short extension cable to PC to more gently make the connection.

Recorder That works Good for Recording Audio But USB Breaksk No Charge Or Data Transfer UPDATE

The WS-853 works good for recording voice memos, recording phone calls, speeches, and things like that. I am very pleased with the recorder as of October 05, 2020.

December 27, 2022 I am adding more informaton to my review today. The USB stick that slides out and plugs into the the computer fails in such away it will not charge and or transfer data. It works occasionally but fails often. The internal connection must be faulty. Another Amazon member said his did the same thing and will be purchasing another WS-853. He gave his 4 stars but I dropped from 5 to 3 because mine did not go 6 years. It went 2 years and about 2 months. He confirmed with Olympus via a phone call that they said this is a usual mode of failure. I don't like only getting 2 years out the deice where I have other recoders that are 30 years old and work well.

If you buy one, I suggest getting an USB cord male, female combination and use it as an extension cord, or whip. This way you can let the device lay flat on a surface without dangling on its own weight. I was very careful sliding the USB male adapter out and inserting it into my PC. I made sure it was fully in the locked position before inserting into my PC. When finished, I would carefully retract the male USB portion back into the recorder.

I'm not sure if using an extension USB whip will help rather than plugging it directly into a PC and letting dangle on its own weight. It's just a thought like the other Amazon member.

If you need something very dependable, I would not purchase an Olypus WS-853. The only reason I did is becasue I use microsd cards and have battery chargers. I like the features that the WS-853 has. It has good filtering for noises like air conditioning. In my opinion, it is not for recording music of any kind if you like high quality, fidelity. Other than that, it does a good job of recording lectures, phone calls, nosies and such.

I'm am a bit disappointed with the Olympus WS-853 but like it enough to purchase another for the things I use it for. The Sony will be used in combination with the Olympus.
I bought another WS-853 today because I like the features and like the other Amazon member will not plug it in to a PC and let it hang. I thought he USB plug was going to be a weak point, and it is. I purchased a Sony Sony ICD-PX470 along with the WS-853 to have a spare. I use these devices a lot. The Sony has a plug too, but only for transferring data not charging. Hopefully it has a better design. It as removable batteries, and it has slot for microsd card.

The plan with the WS-853 I have now is to remove the microsd card to read it then reinstall it. The internal 8 GB memory will be useless because the USB portion will be dead soon. Then remove the batteries and charge them on my charger then reinstall.

I like devices that I can remove batteries and memory cards. I try and stay away from buit in unchangable battery, etc. devices if possible.
