The Brunton 1894 Vintage Pocket Compass is a Gentleman's accessory. Nicely made, attractive, fits in my pocket nicely with no sharp edges.

I expected a Brunton compass to be oil dampened for the price I paid for it.

Land navigation would be a challenge with this compass. There are better compasses for trekking and field work. But it is a nice compass and it is part of my EDC.

I am very happy with this purchase, mainly because I got it for 75% off randomly on here when the price suddenly dropped $150 one night.

Anyhow, it's awesome! The swivel lid which is nice and tight fitting, features a needle lift mechanism, locking the needle in place when the compass is closed. The lid swivels open to reveal a mirror, and the compass with an induction damped compass needle, and the classic cardinal direction points...I've been wanting something of this quality for a while now and have finally found it. Since it's engrave-able, I will most definitely have to do so, and will be just that much better when personalized.

Some people said theirs did not come in a gift box, which was weird that mine did. It is a decent gift or storage box too, also comes with a cool little pamphlet about the compass, history, and registration form for warranty purposes.

This is a quality USA build, made in Riverton, Wyoming...can't beat it! I will use this for day hikes and general orientation purposes only. I have been advised by Brunton per my inquiry that this compass has NO waterproof properties at all and is not recommended as a "True Navigation" tool, due to its minimalistic features...However "D.W. Brunton" himself had one just like this over 100 years ago and probably did all sorts of navigation with his.

Highly recommended, especially if you can score one for the price I just did!

PS: If anyone is looking for an awesome way to carry this compass, I recommend the "Tanner Goods - Key Lanyard". Perfect clip to affix right onto the loop on top on this compass and tether to your belt. Another quality USA piece of gear to compliment this compass.

I purchased this as a gift for someone very dear to me and I have to say I wasn't disappointed and neither was the recipient. The instructions should tell someone how to open it (you slide it); I'm glad I figured it out, as I can imagine someone breaking it or, like I did, thinking it's like a pocket watch and pressing the button opens the case.

The detail is beautiful and the quality impeccable. For those complaining about the size, it's all in the product details, so not sure why there are complaints. Coming from Brunton, I know it's a high-quality product, as they are known for their optics and I've used Brunton products for other hobbies. Some engravers wouldn't touch it; others would (for a hefty price tag). I opted not to get it engraved and I wish, now, I paid the extra to do so.

Excellent construction and handy pocket compass. Needle takes longer to settle than other compasses and it's not water proof. I paid about 60 dollars and it's worth picking up if it's on sale for a 100 dollars or less. If I'd paid 200 dollars I'd be complaining about the soft aluminum case, the long time to settle, and no declination. For 60 dollars I'm excited to have a very cool pocket compass similar to the ones used when the US was being settled.
