This review is for the single speaker combo amp, not the stereo version. This single speaker is by far the most portable version, which is what attracted me to it.
After reading all the great reviews on this tiny little amp, I thought I would give it a try as something I could imagine making space for when I travel. It just did not deliver remotely enough or high enough quality sound for it to be worthwhile.
The short take:
- Volume: barely enough to be heard in a quiet room without jacking gain above 50% and volume to 100%.
- Sound quality: Meh. Pretty much all notes below C (A string) or so have noticeable distortion even with gain near minimum.
- Tone controls: I could find nothing I liked about the tone controls. A simple bass-mid-treble would have been better.
- Headphone out: Okay, so it is actually a decent headphone amp, but awfully bulky compared to the alternatives for that.
- Portability: Great. If it sounded okay.
This is one of those reminders that you really can’t suspend the laws of physics. A single 3” speaker without a port or passive radiator (like most BT speakers in this price range have) is just not going to produce much low-frequency output. Connected to a 3w power section that was clearly taxed by any signal with actual bass frequencies in it, this thing was simply unsatisfying to play with.
I think I isolated the issues I had to the power section, since the output through the headphone out was actually clean and pretty decent (as long as I kept all the tone controls flat). But through the speaker, even with the gain all the way down and all other tone controls flat, any note from about the bottom few notes on the A string on down had noticeable hair and a distinct blatting with each pluck. I am not an ape on the strings, ether. Through headphones the same settings were clean, so it seems to be an issue with the amp/speaker. To hear it at these settings required the output volume to be set at full, and still I had to put it up to my ear to really hear it (in a quiet room!) Raising the gain, or messing with the various compression and tone controls just mucked up the sound to my ear. It was possible to get it loud enough to actually hear, but the low notes were just messy. Tried different sets of batteries, and two different basses with the full range of volume and tone pot settings - same basic results.
Final thought. I really wanted this to work. I’ve been traveling a lot and wanted to have something I could carry around that didn’t always necessitate headphones. The reviews were so great, I thought I would try it out. It was so disappointing that I could not ship it back fast enough. Maybe I got a bum unit.
