Hegen bottles are the BEST!
I’ve been using Dr browns bottles for my baby girl since the day she was born. I have so many of them in different sizes and types because Dr Browns has so many good reviews and all my friends are using this for their babies. But I have to say with big regret this just isn’t the right bottle for my baby and me. It leaks all the time and it still makes dear daughter being extremely gassy after all those unbelievably hard cleaning parts! I felt horrible when I saw my baby girl drowning in the formula and coughing and crying because of the gas in her little tummy until I finally came cross with Hegen.
Firstly, it never leaks. I don’t have to worry that the formula could get into the crease my baby girl’s neck any more. No more 30-mins staring at the bottle any more!
Secondly, it never once causes my baby girl to cough. The teats and its flow speed are just right.
Thirdly, although I’m not sure to what extend it helps with the gas issue, it certainly makes burping easier than before.
Lastly, it is so much easier to clean! I don’t have to spend hours standing in front the sink washing all those small tiny parts from Dr Browns any more! You don’t need me to tell you how important it is for a new mom to save some precious time to sleep or have some time of her own!
I love the simple and beautiful design of Hegen. I know the price is on the high end but trust me it worths every penning you spend on it. I’ll recommend it to all my friends. One thing I have to bring it up here is just make sure you put the teats on correctly - line it up with the Hegen logo on the collar and press it firmly from the inside so it seals good. Otherwise you may still have to go through ‘leaking’ or ‘seeing gas bubbles’. It’s not the problem of these bottles. It is because you didn’t use it right. Go on Youtube or wherever to figure it out the right way to put it all together and enjoy the feeding moment with your little one from there!
Still using these bottles. Figured out how to put them together quickly. The price still feels a bit high, especially for accessories, but there’s no question that they reduce air intake/gas. I have noticed that my baby now refuses to take any other bottles that he took with no problem before, and he stopped nursing after using these for a while as well. So, I’m not sure that these are the best for nursing moms.
I purchased some additional nipples, as well as the 8oz storage containers, thinking (erroneously) that since the description said they are interchangeable, I could use those tops for storage, or as a bottle collar . Now, looking at the description again, I can see that’s misunderstood. I thought the caps were like the Spectra ones, where the center comes out. So, I now have one collar for 3 bottles, and that is my fault. But, there is also no way to purchase the collars by themselves, unless I purchase the nipple/teat combo at $12 EACH. That’s $24 for two collars, in addition to the (already high) cost of the bottles.
Only the bottle/storage base is truly interchangeable. This sort of modular system works well enough, but requires many separate purchases for full functionality. Furthermore, some of the components, like the part for milk expression, is pictured, but doesn’t seem to be offered for sale.
Quite honestly, it’s overwhelming, and a bit confusing,—at least for this new mom. While caring for a new baby 24-7, healing, dealing with minimal sleep, etc., I need things to be as simple as possible. I still think the bottles work well once you get the hang of using them (you have to press the edges of the nipple firmly into the collar btw, or it will leak all over you and baby), but the cost, availability of components, etc., and extra time and effort required to figure it all out, can be frustrating.
I’ve had the 5oz bottle, with the slow flow nipple, for a few days now, and so far it appears to be working well for my son.
The pros: He isn’t swallowing a bunch of air. The nipple and latch seem to be better for him. And, it’s possible to finish all or most of the milk in the bottle. The markings are clear and easy to see. Also, it’s easy to clean.
The cons: The nipple has to be positioned in a particular direction to work. The bottle and collar are hard to separate if they’re wet.
The cap is hard to snap off, and pulls at the nipple when it does, possibly damaging it over time. It appears that the nipple/collar also have to line up in a specific way to fit securely. Once, when I pulled the cap off, with my baby in hand, the collar came off as well, causing milk to spill everywhere. So, those things take time when you’re trying to feed a hungry infant.
The bottles *are* expensive. I thought that I was ordering two at this price, but that was my own oversight.
We’ve been using Comotomo bottles for some time, and like the design, but those bottles allow the baby to swallow a lot of air, and that leads to discomfort. So, despite the drawbacks I mentioned, we plan to continue using this and observing our son for a while before purchasing additional bottles.
