The AT VM540ML Cartridge is outstanding

My new Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB turntable came with the stock AT-VMN95E elliptical stylus. Sounded great but I knew there was a better sound if I researched it. So after some research on the AT website, I realized for my listening profile, the micro linear stylus was the way to go versus the elliptical. The micro-linear provides much more surface contact with the record grooves. Once I swapped cartridges (the AT VM540ML cartridge & headshell came perfectly aligned... I checked it with a protractor), I was blown aways with the crystal clarity of the vocals and the separation of the instruments. The bass is pronounced and huge. The cartridge reproduces the sound that the producers wanted you to hear.

Love the upgrade on AT-LP120XUSB

I have the Audio Technica AT-LP120XUSB. I also have a deer hide mat under my stock AT mat to help absorb vibration and adjust the height of the vinyl slightly. This means my cartridge bottom is parallel to the vinyl since my turntable has a fixed height tone arm base. I use the 1 pound AT disc stabilizer. I used a protractor to slightly adjust the cartridge from its preinstalled setting and used a scale to adjust stylus pressure to 2.0 grams as noted in specs. The weight on this is very important because the VM540ML/H combo weighs 1 gram more than the stock VMN95E and all that weight is right at the stylus. The tone arm counter balance weight had to be dialed back to only 0.5 grams from 2.0 to get the desired stylus pressure. With all that said, this thing sounds phenominal. I give credit to the stock VMN95E for doing a good job out of the box. But the VM540ML has a clarity and a silence that is easy to hear right away. I did not have a volume change when comparing cartridges. Hearing real bongos from the left soundstage when they used to sound like a drum machine from the center was the moment i knew there was a difference. Cymbals are more clear and you can hear the high hats actually touch. Don't forget to use the handy headshell holder at the back of the turntable for the stock set up. Also makes it easy to compare back and forth for the first 3 hours you test out the new set up!

This is a fantastic stylus! After listening to a variety of records be it 45's, re-released 180 gram LPs or LPs that are 50 years old ... the bottom line is this cartridge delivers!!

I never thought I'd spend this much on a cartridge but after reading the insane amount of positive reviews I knew I had to take a chance. I replaced the original cartridge/stylus that came with my Audio Technica 120XUSB turntable. I have absolutely no complaints about this purchase.

The sound is much brighter, louder and simply better overall. Nice separation and clarity as well. Will it be a good fit for you and your setup? Only you can answer that. I wouldn't hesitate to make this purchase again.

Whether I am listening to classic rock, metal pop, soul or country, my listening experience is significantly improved with my new cartridge.

Updated: Great control of Inner Groove Distortion, but takes time to settle in

Sound quality was lacking at first, but has come into its own with some break-in. The upper frequencies seemed a bit muted at first, but it has brightened a little with use giving a fairly balanced profile. Bass is well defined, clean, and not overly aggressive. Mid-range and higher frequencies are present and accounted for, but not as detailed as I would expect from a specialty cut stylus like this one. I came from a much cheaper Ortofon OM-10 that easily won hands down in the presentation of treble, dynamics, and perceived presence, although it had somewhat muddy-sounding bass and struggled with playing inner grooves without noticeable distortion.

Where the AT cartridge shines is a lack of distortion. It is quite distortion free from beginning to end on each record. Inner groove distortion is very well controlled! I guess the best word I could use to describe the performance of this cartridge is “balanced,” which is a positive, but can honestly come across as somewhat sterile in some instances. It is definitely a step up from my previous cartridge in overall performance, but while it lacks the bothersome distortion, it also lacks some of the wow factor that you get during dynamic or treble-forward passages of a song.

Update: I had to come back and update this review to give this cartridge the 5 stars that it deserves. The break-in period seems to be a bit long, but this cartridge does liven up quite a bit after giving it some time. I have probably put another 20+ hours on it since the review was written, and it has continued to improve in dynamics and detail. It sounds excellent across the board now. The wow factor is back when listening to some of my favorite LPs.

Well, I posted a review last week with pictures but its not here… I wonder why Amazon? Pictured is the first one that I received with a crooked stylus. They sent me a replacement that was straight, but its not as paralleled to the grooves. I have a AT-LP120XBT-USB turntable. I followed the instructions directly from an Audio Technica technician (which I had to end up contacting again later on). I also listened to the same album right before with the AT95E cartridge, as well as after with the VM540ML/H combo. For some reason, the album skips with the latter, but not with the AT95E—if that makes any sense… It doesn’t seem as loud as the former cheaper cartridge either. However, some background noise that was formerly present is now much quieter, other than the now present skips.

I also tested out Audio Intelligence multi-step cleaner (with different brushes), VS. L’Art Du Son cleaner, on opposing sides of the same record. I must admit, I preferred L’Art Du Son’s one step over Audio Intelligence, but it’s not recommended for really dirty to soiled records by itself. It also has a pleasant smell.

FYI do NOT buy Mofi record brushes (from Amazon OR directly from Mofi). They will flake all over the record when applying virtually no pressure. I should’ve listened to the reviews. I’ll stick to the Mofi sleeves but that’s it. It’s sad that people can’t trust the biggest brand names in contemporary audio solutions.
