Breathable velour cushionsCrafting the Philips Fidelio X2HR starts with meticulously choosing each material for its functionality and ergonomic comfort. Deluxe memory foam ear-pads are matched with a velour material of optimized density with high breathability, to dissipate pressure and heat for longer-wearing comfort. |
Self-adjustable hammockThe self-adjustable lightweight hammock features an airy 3D mesh, which is not only breathable, but is flexible enough to ensure a perfect fit – always. |
Acoustic open back designAn acoustic open-back architecture eliminates air pressure build-up behind the driver, allowing the diaphragm ample free movement, greatly enhancing sound transparency and smoothening extended high frequencies. |
High resolution audioHigh Resolution Audio offers the best in audio performance, reproducing original studio master recordings more faithfully than 16bit/44.1kHz CD formats. This uncompromising quality makes High Resolution Audio the best sound companion for the music lover. Fidelio headphones meet the stringent standards required for the Hi-Res Audio stamp of quality. |

- These cans are possibly the most comfortable you'll ever wear. You can wear them for hours effortlessly.
- Excellent build quality -- you can really feel the durability when you pick them up. These are built to last.
- Removable 3.5mm jack means easily replaceable cable and easily installed inline modmic if you're buying these to game.
- Large soundstage means great for immersion in movies and gaming.
Con (One, Big Con):
- Nowhere near "audiophile" quality. I'm not sure how so many people are rating the sound so highly. Perhaps all they've ever listened to are Beats and Logitechs? I've owned several pairs of higher-end studio monitor headphones, and these fail to compare.
The first thing I noticed when trying these out was the very muddy bass. While bass extension is very good, what is delivered in quantity is lacking in quality -- the bass is without detail and poorly defined. I almost thought I'd received a defective pair. The mids are muffled, or maybe just completely lost due to the sloppy bass. The highs were at least satisfactory. Even after trying several different EQ profiles, I could never get these to sound close to accurate.
Summary:
I really wanted to like these given all of the pros above, but they are not accurate headphones. If you care about the "fidelity" part of high fidelity, and want your music detailed and clear, these are not the headphones for you. If you already have a good pair of high-quality headphones for music, and want something else for gaming and movies for lots of bass and immersion and very little else, pick this up.

Now I'll exlain. I bought these on sale and was not expecting much. I heard they were bass heavy, "bloated" and "muddy" with deeply recessed vocals. Fine, for the price I gave them a shot. WOW. What a surprise. They are EXCEPTIONAL in every single category: build, comfort, low end, detail in mids and highs, soundstage, imaging. They're easy to drive and don't need a separate Amp, but take to them great if you want.
Yes, the sound signature on the X2 is "warm", there's more bass and the vocals aren't in your face. But what that actually means is music sounds exceptionally alive. Bass isn't bloated or "muddy", it's ambient and impactful. It's detailed in the best way. Music sounds so enjoyable. Simply put, the low end on these and what it does to the overall experience is something to behold.
The X2s are not stale or "analytic." You won't hear the singer's dry throat with these. The X2 is not for people trying to here someone coughing in the background of some 32-bit file that isn't even audible to human ears. These are for people who love music and actually listen to music. And while you may not feel like the singer is breathing into your ear, they are still incredibly detailed in the vocals and string instruments. Acoustic, classical, jazz all sound exceptional. Everything sounds excellent. All that, for under $200 is a STEAL. For under $150 it's a must.
In my opinion, the Fidelio X2HR are HEAD and SHOULDERS better than the SHP9500s. They're on par with the Hifiman 4xx in terms of clarity, soundstage and detail, BUT the 4xx require a very good amp to drive. These don't. If they sold these in a wood box and charges $900, people would be oh ok. They're built so nice, with sound to match.
And let's not forget, sound quality at a certain level just tops off. That's why the 58x, 6xx, 4xx and these are so popular. Cause you don't need more. An entire album will sound identical to a $2000 headphone but for ONE cymbal on ONE song and audiophiles would say "See, THAT is why you pay the big bucks." It's not worth it. Stop pretending you hear the drummer coughing in the background and comparing the crispness of ONE cymbal and just get back to enjoying music. Get these.

I wanted an upgrade and had my eyes on these X2's for a while. So glad I made the purchase. Gaming with these is so much more enjoyable. The low end bump of these over my other headphones really shines through in games from explosions to bullet-fire. Everything is just more rich and full feeling. Sound stage is nice and big for gaming and works well when paired with a virtual surround solution like on my X7. X2's with a VMODA BoomPro are my unicorn for gaming. These are also built like a tank and extremely comfortable. I thought my SHP9500's were very comfortable too, but these stay put with a little tighter clamp without any discomfort. A worthy upgrade with a bit of a price hike, but I'm glad I finally acquired the X2's.
Music with the X2 is equally impressive. You'll like see "Lively" and "Fun" used to describe the X2's sound if you check out reviews. I find them to be a great all around headphone that you can enjoy any type of music with, even more bass centric tracks that left me wanting with my other open-back headphones. I'll still pull out the Sennheiser's once in a while to switch it up for certain types of music, but the X2 could be my only headphone and I'd be fine with that.
If you game and want a higher end setup, these plus a BoomPro are awesome. If you want better sound than cheap gaming headsets for a lower price, then I would highly recommend the SHP9500's with a BoomPro. You'll miss a little bit of excitement in the sound (especially on the low-end) compared to the X2, but they are very nice in their own right. Music is a treat too. You can spend a million bucks and buy a ton of headphones if you're a super audiophile that likes to experiment, but these are great for everything in my humble opinion.
Update: I sat on them by accident. They didn't break, bend, or show any signs of damage. Your mileage may vary, but I'm 230lbs and they didn't budge. Built like a tank.
