When the V3 came out, I started to envy the cool looking watch-ness of it … but when my VivoActive HR went bad, Garmin replaced it with another HR! Very cool of them but that meant I was in for the long haul because I couldn't justify buying something else. THankfully, I wore the HR playing hockey a few months back and a puck saved the DAY! SMASH! Once again Garmin tried to save me by offering 20% off with a damage trade-in but that wasn't going to cut-it for me ... I needed to look around at the hundreds of wearables before I decided ...
So I ended up with the Coros Apex 42mm. WHY? The month-long battery life was appealing to me and it seemed to be a nice sports watch with a good look. Looking back I wonder if it just had better photos online than the Garmin VA3!
I added some comparison images to this review if you care to see what the Coros Apex looks like in comparison. But either way that Coros Apex watch really made me miss the Garmin VA HR! Yes the Coros battery can last so long you forget about it, but I think that's because the screen is just really DIM! I missed the touch screen, the Garmin ecosystem, the music controls, the almost excessive number of sports and workouts you can choose, the quick access to many available menu items and just the general finished and ready feeling the Garmin has. I don't want to slam the Coros but it just isn't ready for prime time. Turns out I really like some of the SMARTwatch stuff rather than just the fitness stuff and the Coros is pretty much for ultra runners who want to track their activity with GPS for 24 hours straight.
OK back to the product at hand … or on wrist … The Vivoactive 3 has everything the HR did but it entirely more stylish. It also has a ton of custom faces which make more fun if you are into that sorta thing. Seriously though - who doesn't like fun? The most surprising thing was how good this watch looks. It is the perfect size for my alien-like thin-guy wrists. Big enough to read but it doesn't feel like I'm carrying around a discus on my arm. I added a comparison image with the HR as well (don’t mind that the HR is smashed)! Hey, who doesn’t get smashed every now and then?
In conclusion, Vivoactive 3 is the bomb diggidy. Great look with all the features I enjoy. Life’s just too dang good.

Half the time I'm working out, the heart rate goes way off, counting 30-50hbpm lower than it should and even resetting it makes no difference. Then for some reason a while later, it pops back to normal. I know it's way off because I check it with the machine I'm working on and one nearby just for a sanity check as well as a quick heartbeat read and calculation. You'd think it's just some kind of craziness because of an intense workout (which it should still be able to handle) but it's not.
Several times a day that I'm sitting in front of my computer and just checking my stress levels, it tells me that I need to sit still so it can read them but it can't until some random time later when I've stopped trying. I've even moved it to sit on my inner wrist but that's no help. Even more annoying is that when I'm working out, my sweat and moving my wrists will cause the menu to activate without my knowledge, causing music volume to change, widget and app choices to be changed, etc. Don't even try to wear it into the shower or in the rain because the menus change and randomly select things every few seconds.

For tracking my runs, it worked fine for the first few weeks. I would start an activity, the GPS would connect right away and off I go. However, it hasn't worked for the last 10+ times I tried it. I go to start an activity, get the "wait for GPS" message, but GPS never connects. I'm in the city, in an open area without buildings or trees blocking anything, but still never connects. I just spent an hour on tech support with Garmin while they tried to fix. Ended support session, went outside to test and still won't connect.
For music, the music will play just fine, but it has now somehow deleted every stored file on the watch 4 times in a row. I get ready to go for a run, see that my music somehow disappeared, so spend the next 20 minutes reloading ~50 songs. Go for a run, works great. A week later I get ready to go for a run again, music is gone, start over from step 1. 4 times this has happened now.
While those are the two issues that bother me the most, this is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of items that don't work correctly. Won't sync with iPhone app (Connect), Connect doesn't keep step count for previous days even after syncing (shows the steps I have today, but nothing for any previous days, even if I synced on those days), settings change/reset themselves regularly without me doing anything. I could go on, but I've wasted enough time with this watch already.
I wish I could return this piece of crap, but unfortunately it worked for the first few weeks and then gave it time in hopes I could get it working properly, and missed the window to return.
Very surprised by this experience. Wife has a Forerunner 235, daughter has a Vivoactive 3 and both work great. This one, not so much.
