The ER3XR can be very awesome. At moderate and high volume levels, the response is excellent with balanced base and highs, and excellent clarity. The noise Isolation can be nothing short of amazing, rivaling the best over the ear noise cancelling headphones in there ability to remove everything but the music. Now there are a lot of reviews that will go into more detail, but if you are reading this, it is because you want to know if you should buy them so on to the meat of the review.
The Etymotic performance is rooted on one key factor, and that is the ability to get a comfortable and tight ear canal seal. When properly sealed and at normal and high volume levels, they are quite excellent to listen to and in fact, some of the best in the ear units I have ever owned. The first negative though is that the flat response does not work well if a lot of your listening is at lower volume levels, where the ear needs a little more stimulation, so if you listen a lot at low volume levels, this alone might be reason not to buy these and instead looking for something with a little more base profile. At normal levels though they are flawless. If your phone has a built in EQ, you can always bump the bass or lower volume listening, and this works well. It is easy to adjust for that.
Some will say that they can be uncomfortable and that is no doubt true, but most report being able to get past that, and I am one of those too. At first, I found them a bit uncomfortable but I adjusted by the second or third wearing.
Now for the real meat of this review. The seal is everything here. Without it, base response will fall off and the isolation will be severely compromised. Now getting a good seal in itself can be very difficult. The deep insertion is probably best done using the method Etymotic suggests, which is to pull out and back on the ear lobe, insert the unit and press it in deep. This can take some wiggling and angling to get around any curves in the ear canal. With practice this can be a bit easier. Now not everyone may have this issue, but it can be an issue.
Next, and vital to the user experience is keeping it sealed. If you are listening while sitting still on a subway train or in an airplane and have the correct seal, the experience can be amazing. Hardly any noise gets through and moderate volume listening drowns out the rest. It is an exceptional experience to wear these such environments as long as the seal is maintained.
Here though is the more serious part of the seal issue. Keeping the seal can be challenging. I wear mine for yard work and when sealed properly, I can barely hear my electric lawnmower, trimmer, or blower. Fantastic. However when you turn you head left, right or up or down, the skin on your neck will tighten or loosen and pull at the ear canal and my own experience is that it does not take much of this for the flanges on the Etymotic to walk back out of the ear canal and break the seal. When it happens it will happen on one side of the other (and for me, it seems to happen more on the left side than the right) and this means that you will have to stop what you are doing and reseat the flanges into your ear canal. Trust me, you will absolutely know when you have lose the seal because the treble and bass will fall off and you will suddenly hear noise that was completely suppressed prior to that.
Unlike the issue with initial comfort, if you buy these and experience this, from my own experience, I would say that you should not expect this to get better. If you are turning your head in different directions to look around or whatever, it is just very easy to loose the seal. I have to re-seat these at least four or five times when I do yardwork. Just pushing them in deeper with the finger does not always work or if you can get them, it won't last, so if you needed both hands to seal them the first time, you are very likely to need both hands to seal them again.
For normal listening levels and higher these have amazing sound quality and unbelievable noise isolation and if you buy them and don't get that kind of isolation, chances are they are not sealed... You have to go very deep with these, then these are highly recommended. If though, you listen at lower levels or are going to wear them for noisy activities in place of hearing protection (and they are that good, putting over ear muffs to shame) I would say to buy them and try them, but if you find the seal breaks and you are constantly having to reseal them, that will not go away. My advice would be to return them and move on if you are wearing them for any kind of working environment where you are moving your head around or bending over a lot.
Sadly, in ear noise cancelling buds are even more prone to loosing the seal or worse yet, just falling out. I kept the Etymotics because as much trouble as they can be, when sealed up and in a noisy environment, they are spectacular for 10 minutes at a time. I am a veteran and had some hearing loss, so I learned to protect my ears from further loss, and nothing works like these so as much trouble as they can be, I still use them for loud environments.
If you are are in the population that can move your head around and not loose the seal, I envy you. If you are using them while riding in a plane, car, or train where you don't have to move around and don't have issues with the seal, it will be hard to get a better, more balanced sound, and impossible to get better noise isolation or even active cancellation.
Difficult to give them five stars because of the seal issues, but when they work as intended, they are fantastic. If you are going to use them for activities where you are moving your head around, they can be tedious.
If you think this review was a good review in helping you understand the value proposition of these units, please say so. I rarely write reviews, but if the feedback is good, then I will feel like it was time well spent. Thank you.

First, my list of likes:
- These ear buds produce even better audio fidelity than the ER4P ear buds. That's quite an accomplishment. I prefer to hear the high notes, and most ear bud manufacturers tend to emphasize the mid-range with abundant bass. These ear buds open up the high end with a nice balance of mid-range and bass. If you want head-thumping bass, the ER3XR might be a little disappointing, but I find the bass response ample enough.
- Cable construction feels more rugged than I remember for the ER4 series. Time will tell how often I have to replace the cables, though.
- The triple flange tips that I like, and were left over from the ER4 and other Etymotic ear buds work with the ER3XR. That has saved me a little expense since I could use them without having to buy more right away.
- The connection between the driver and the cable is static. There is less chance that the contacts on the driver will wear out over time like I experienced with another brand.
Now for the only dislike I have for now:
- I buy ear buds because I use them while riding motorcycles. The ER3XR driver assemblies are larger than the previous Etymotic ear buds I have tried. It is going to be difficult getting my helmet over them, and this might also cause a problem with comfort.
