The color is not tactical at all, but it was a last minute purchase. I recommend black if you are military.
I was in the Sierra's for about 5 weeks; 3 weeks were spent up on the mountains and away from base camp, between 7,000 and 9,000 ft above sea level.
Temperatures plunged to -20° F some nights, and would get as warm as 20° F some days. That being said, a durable and versatile base layer balaclava was exactly what I needed.
This was it! I wore it around my neck during the day. Breaking trail in softer snowpack is hot work, so I often worried about over-heating if I kept it on, but while stationary, all I had to do was pull it up over my head to keep the chill off.
When on night patrols in the subzero temperatures, I wore it full masked. Keep in mind I had a skull cap/beanie and a neck gator over top of this, but the difference was noticeably warmer compared to going without the icebreaker.
I would definitely recommend this to anyone as a great base layer. It's light, feels comfortable, made well, won't break the bank, and most importantly, it works like it should!
