Enhance the DT 1990 Pro’s fun factor.

If you are like myself, when you first get the Beyer Dynamics DT 1990 Pro you really appreciate the headphone for detail but notice the imbalance of the bass versus the highs with either stock pad. While a professional workload wouldn’t benefit from this pad swap, the Dekoni Elite Hybrid pads enhance the fun factor of the DT 1990 Pro by changing the acoustics around your ear which brings out more bass and making the highs a bit more comfortable. On the head the pads feel more premium than the stock pads but do feel slightly warmer over time as the leather and foam do not breathe as much as the stock pads. I still recommend to any DT 1990 Pro owners hesitant to pad swap to do so with these as it retains the mid detail, lessens the potentially fatiguing brightness of the highs, and boosts bass.

A worthy upgrade

This review is for the Dekoni Hybrid pads installed on my unmodified Beyerdynamics DT-1990.

These pads are quite large, about an inch thick. They have a very wide sidewall as well, about 3/4 inches. The cup itself is uniform circular with a fairly straight wall. The lambskin leather is stitched to both the inner and outer sidewalls. The materials seem to be very high quality. The leather is very supple and the memory foam core is soft, not stiff.

Being leather pads, these naturally do a lot more reflecting than absorbing of the sound. This results in containment and slight reduction of the sound stage. That's okay though because the DT-1990s are so wide to begin with. In exchange for this small sacrifice, you get a noticeably punchier bass and overall warmer sound.

Comfort on these pads is also amazing. As mentioned, the pads are huge, but they still fit my head quite well. I feel no pressure on my glasses whatsoever. The cloth face means that I get all audio attenuation benefits of leather pads but without the sweat.

All in all, 5/5. I love what these pads do with sound and that posh comfort is so nice.

Elite Velours a great replacement for DT990 Pro 250ohm

The stock pads for my DT990 Pro 250ohm were worn, flattened, and uncomfortable. They needed to be replaced.

After reading reviews, I initially bought the Elite Hybrids as a replacement. Those were very disappointing -- they changed the sound significantly, and not in a good way. The hybrids closed off the soundstage, making it feel like a semi-open or even closed-backed headphone. The low frequencies were extremely amplified, making the overall sound feel muddied with a distinct loss in clarity. I may try the hybrids on my DT770s, instead.

I now have the Elite Velours, which I am much happier with. The velours do not significantly change the stock sound of the DT990s. All of the clarity and openness continues to be present, with the sound feeling warmer (the stock sound felt a bit more sterile, by comparison). The pads, themselves, are thick and very comfortable. There is a lot more space between the pads and the drivers than the stock pads, and they feel very well cushioned. I definitely recommend the Elite Velours as replacement pads for the DT990 Pros; they are a step up in quality without sacrificing all that is good about the stock sound.

I am so impressed with these pads. I was a fan of the DT1990 Pro, but they were very fatiguing after a while do to the peak in the highs and the discomfort of the stock pads. I have been using EQ to listen to them, but that wasn’t what I really wanted from a pair of $599 headphones.

Along comes these pads, which fix every issue I have had with the DT1990. It enhances the bass, and smooths out the highs. I wouldn’t called it totally balanced, but it’s an extremely warm and pleasing sound. I don’t feel it negatively impacts imaging or soundstage, either. It does give them a warmer and more balanced sound without sacrificing detail.

Overall, this is a must for the DT1990, in my opinion.

Excellent, easy to install, improves bass

These are great replacement pads for the DT770, DT880, DT990, Custom One Pro, and any similar sized pair of headphones. The leather is soft and feels great against the skin. Though the price isn't cheap, these pads are made well, and extremely comfortable. Best of all, they improved the sound of my DT770.

Installation
These particular Dekoni Elite Lambskin pads fit the Beyerdynamic DT series as well as the Custom One Pro. I have both the DT770 32 Ohm and the Custom One Pro headphones - these pads fit easily over them. In fact, they are much easier to get into place than the pads that come with the headphones. Like the stock pads, these pads have a lip around them that fit over the outside edge of the headphone cups. But unlike the stock pads, the lip on these is larger and easier to pull around the earcups than the stock pads. So as a result, installing these onto the headphones takes a lot less time and effort.

Comfort
Of course the most important aspect of any pair pads is comfort. I've had these Dekoni Elite pads on for hours without any issues of soreness or pressure. As far as heat goes - my ears do get a little hot I will admit - but not anymore than they did with the stock pads - and even that wasn't much. Also, since these are leather - they do not "absorb" sweat or moisture like fabric pads do. The pads fit around my ears, and not on them (like the stock pads). So my ears are never sore from any pressure the pads apply. Lastly, the memory foam is very soft and comfortable. They are like big pillows around my ears. These pads are definitely a step-up from the stock pads in every way.

Sound
The bass response improves with these pads on - probably because they insulate better than the stock pads. In the case of the Custom One Pro, the bass becomes slightly more boomy. While this was initially impressive; I didn't keep the pads on the Custom One Pros for long. Those headphones are already bass-heavy - no need to add more. When these pads were installed on the DT770, the bass response is improved, and the treble was slightly rolled off. This is actually what I wanted - because I felt that the DT770 lacked a bit of bass to begin with, and the treble could sometimes be a bit harsh (a well-known attribute of the DT770). So for me, the DT770's sound improved enough that I would call this a worthwhile purchase. (I will admit that I still run my DT770 through a headphone amp and DAC to further imrpove the sound.)

Conclusion
If you have a DT770 (or any headphone that fits), and you want to improve the bass response - get these Dekoni Elite Lambskin pads. They are easy to install, feel great, and the materials are top notch. They are also much easier to install than the stock pads - and will likely last longer.
