I do a fair amount of research before buying products and generally rely on customer reviews, and some professional "reviews". What I should have done in this case was also research known quality and technical problems with the product. If I did, then I would have found all the 3.5mm ModMics have issues with Realtek which results in extremely low audio volume. However, I trusted there weren't any widespread compatibility issues since it wasn't mentioned in any of the reviews I read.
What's frustrating about this is that Antlion isn't transparent about this known issue. This is a problem for several generations of their products: 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 and now the Uni. They know a potential fix is to buy their USB adapter or use other USB sound cards, but never say why you may need to in their FAQ. So you're left to buy one after you find out the new ModMic you received is useless. The last time I see it mentioned on their website is back when it was first discovered with 3.0. Heck, there's even a blog post where they compare 2.0, 3.0 and 4.0, claiming 4.0 won't have the same issues with Realtek. Surprise, it still did.
In case it wasn't clear the issue I have with the Modmic Uni: the volume is extremely low even with the level is set at 100. It becomes barely acceptable with a 10 dB boost but that introduces noise.
