First thought after powering them up: Where is this hiss coming from? I thought I could adjust with the volume, but no luck. The hiss is always there, a low volume white noise that does not go away while the speakers are powered and idle. If the speakers are facing your seated position, it's even more pronounced. I can also discern the hiss when playing quiet music. These are *near* field speakers, right?
Last thought… I have tried contacting KRK (aka Gibson) for a few items and no response so far: on an unrelated power question, on the hiss, and about their app. It's been a couple weeks and still no response.
They sound awesome when playing music, but that hiss may be a deal breaker. I usually leave my studio speakers powered up, but that hiss is distracting. I feel like I need to adjust something, but nothing I adjust gets rid of it. These speakers are too expensive to have ANY noise when idle, and that white noise is still there if you play something soft or quiet.
For those with suggestions, please first look for other reviewers comments on the constant hiss. It's not power conditioning, not radio interference, not cable quality or balance, not adjustable using EQ or volume control. That hiss is always there, a white noise at around -70 dB. If you can stand it, then these monitors are great! If not, do not buy KRK.
Final thought… I ended up returning them. The tweeter hiss was just too distracting. I got the smaller yet more expensive Neumann monitors. I’m really happy I did. Gibson/KRK never responded to any of my inquiries, and the tweeter hiss was untenable. Dropped to 3 stars.
Didn't know what to expect regarding improvements and performance. Well... These monitors have absolutely been improved. Fantastic headroom on highs, mids are excellent and huge improvement on bass delivery as heard in my studio. Very tight. Clarity is amazing with setting on flat. Add EQ adjustments (which is really straight forward and very easy to use) All I can say is... WOW! They blew me away. Professionally, highly recommend these monitors. Perfection personified.
EXCEPT... when they're plugged in, there's constant low-level white noise coming from the monitors. This is without plugging in any source, with power running through a Furman conditioner, in a house with new wiring. Volume level on the monitors and adjusting the EQ had no effect... the hiss (in the woofer AND tweeter) is constant. And easily audible from 6 feet away.
The 5" gen 1s were silent, but the 8" gen 4s were hissy. If you look through the other reviews here, you'll see similar complaints. I tried to work with it for a week, and I just couldn't get past it. I returned the monitors.
Which is a bummer! Apart from the hiss, these sound excellent. With high energy music, I could totally ignore it, but as soon as I got to a quieter, more dynamic section, the hiss got in the way of mixing at a reasonable volume. I hope this is something KRK can fix in future generations. I like their app (even if the wiring required to use it is weird), and I like their look. But it doesn't matter if the speakers generate noise that gets in the way of what they're supposed to do.
