THE WORST TECH SUPPORT IN THE INDUSTRY

I have set up this product and read the 50 page user manual. The manual does not MENTION configuring the hard drives, set up of Apple Time Machine, RAID configuration-ZERO. I SPENT THREE HOURS-ON THE PHONE, VIA CHAT, AND WEB FORM. IT WAS NOT POSSIBLE TO CONNECT WITH THE COMPANY VIA ANY MEANS DURING THAT 3 HOURS. I waited on hold for 40 minutes and was then told to leave a message and the message box was full and the line just disconnected. I was #1 in line for chat for 1HOUR! It doesn't matter if the product is good or not if you can't connect with the company for support. I am returning the product and will never purchase a QNAP product again. To Amazon's credit they tried to offer their own tech support and were unable to get set up information from QNAP.

I purchased this product almost a month ago. I still have not been able to get it to work. I searched their knowledgebase and couldn't find anything to help. There is no quick start guide or something I could use to assist in setting it up. I contacted their support and get instructions for Windows XP. I sent a reply back and am waiting for an update. I work in IT, so this is especially frustrating that the unit is so difficult to set up.

Switched from Synology

Started with Synology first as some reviews online were saying that Qnap a lot more complicated than Synology. In reality, I had Synology for quite some time and couldn’t figure out many settings. When contacted Synology support all they did just copied links from manual.
Qnap tech support is very helpful. Human approach. They explain in easy manner. Also, Qnap operating system a lot easier for understanding than Synology, at least for me. Glad, that I switched to Qnap.

A solid Plex solution

I bought this NAS because I wanted a simpler Plex solution, something easier to use. I use Plex for all my media so that was my only goal. Prior to this NAS, I used a PC with a USB attached RAID box for dee storage.
When I first opened the box (super well packaged BTW), my first thought was how substantial it felt in my hands, not flimsy at all and like it used quality materials in construction. My first upgrade was installing an additional 8 Gb stick of RAM.
*Pro Tip: the manual for this NAS states a maximum of 8 Gb RAM, you can absolutely go beyond that, I’m running, and the system is recognizing, 12 Gb.
So far, 4K files struggle a little bit, like if I pause a movie and try to start it again in another room of my house, it’ll fail to load and I’ll have to restart the movie. I aggregated my network ports and my house is hard wired for Cat5e so it’s not a bandwidth issue, I think it’s more the hard drives themselves. 1080p files and lower don’t have this issue.
One thing to note is that if you want Plex to do hardware transcoding, it requires a Plex Pass. I was not aware of this going in.
Overall, I’m very happy with this device. It fits my use case perfectly and I’ve had zero issues navigating the web interface.

I am using my QNAP TS-251D to store all of my personal files as well as movies, tv shows, music, home videos and photos. I use Plex with Apple TV and my Roku TV and I am able to stream the media from the NAS without issue. I also use the NAS as a DVR to record live TV using an HDHomerun. I am able to access the files with all computers in my house and also using my iPad & iPhone using the numerous QNAP iOS apps. I am very happy with this machine.
