Ultimately I'm happy I purchased these, despite some very annoying issues.
First, the Pro's:
The sound quality is fantastic. I had been using my SE425's connected directly to my iPhone using a lightning cable, the quality was fine. I was hoping these would be at least as good as a direct connection, but the sound quality is much much better!! This goes to show that the built in driver/amp in the iPhone is crap, the driver/amp in these bluetooth adapters is great. I'm truly blown away at how much better these sound.
They're comfortable. I've worn these for as long as 8 hours straight and experienced no discomfort.
The case/charger works really well. I've read reviews that say the case/charger is awkward and difficult to use, but I find it very easy and convenient. I love that it holds three charges. I also like that the case is fairly rigid, which really protects my earpieces from being crushed. (I had to replace my left SE425 a few years ago because somehow it got crushed in the little black canvas case the adapter came with.)
Firmware upgradeable - this is a definitely plus.....assuming they actually do release updates periodically, which I'm really crossing my fingers on (more about that in the Con's section).
Passthrough mode works great when enabled. This is a feature I've been wanting for a long time and they did a great job of implementing it.
Now the Con's:
No volume or next-track buttons. If you want to adjust the volume or skip to the next track, gotta do it on your device. It's not the end of the world, but these adapters are very sophisticated, so I'd have expected they'd have that covered. To me that's a pretty big deficit, but the adapters are still worth it to me.
Phone calls, Siri, and certain other sources like Google Meet video conference are all mono, the audio is only heard in the right ear. Shure is up front about this, they say it right on the product page, but that doesn't make it any less annoying. I'd use these for a phone call in a pinch, but only if I absolutely had to.
The microphone stinks. It's not the end of the world, I bought these to listen to music, not for phone conversations, but either way it's worth mentioning that the microphone doesn't work well at all. The few times I've used these on the phone or in Google Meet, people said they could barely hear me.
Connection Problems - this is by far the most annoying issue to me.
Every so often, usually when my environment changes, like entering a stairwell, or small space, the earphones wig out. The cut in and out over and over, but after a minute or two they settle down and continue smoothly. When they wig out like this, a lot of the time the left and right earphones will get out of sync and the music is now echoing. It's easily resolved by stopping the music, turning the adapters off, turning them back on, wait until they connect to the device, then play again. It's a hassle.
When I first got these (I updated firmware immediately), it'd slip into this echo-mode 4-5 times/day. When I wrote technical support about it, they suggested I factory reset them. I did that and they performed beautifully for about a day, they didn't wig out at all, and absolutely no echoing. But within two or three days they started wigging out and echoing again. Now they slip into echo-mode probably 3-4 times a day. It's 7:15am and they've already gone into echo-mode three times this morning. I'm sure factory resetting would help, but doing that every two days is far less convenient than just restarting them when it happens.
The fact that it did behave so beautifully for a solid day tells me that they're capable of performing smoothly, and it's probably (hopefully) a firmware issue....so I'm checking for a firmware update every day, hoping that eventually this problem will be solved. If/when this wigging out and echoing problem is solved, I'd happily add a star to my rating.
In summary, I'm still happy I bought these, there are a lot of problems with them, but the amazing sound quality really goes a long way in making up for those problems.
