Wow, what a find! This a beautiful looking and sounding instrument. It is my first bassoon, so I can't compare, but I love the sound and all the keys seem to work just fine. I was willing to try this since I was happy with the inexpensive oboe from Yinfente. As a beginner, I didn't want to spend $5,000 on an instrument. $1300 is a bargain. Very happy with this purchase.
I knew I was taking a risk buying such a cheap instrument and after having it for a month the price definitely makes sense. I’ve only learned a small range of notes on the bassoon in a month and I’ve already found multiple keys that once depressed don’t lift back up causing subsequent notes to play wrong. I tried adjusting the tension with the screws to no avail. I’m already feeling frustration with this instrument, and I’m guessing it will only get worse as I learn more notes. I’m happy there’s something available at this price point to see if bassoon is something I will stick with before dropping a ton of money, but I also feel that this instrument will be severely limiting. I think it’s ok for testing the waters, but I wouldn’t expect to be playing it long term.
This is not a great instrument. There are some pitch problems especially the bocals make it very flat. The tone holes are not open enough rendering certain notes flat and the placement of the keys is very uncomfortable. I kept the instrument as a back up but I’ve had to put over $200 to a repairman to fix it for me to make it acceptably playable.
I’ve also had a bocal maker make one that would correct some of these intonation problems. A student would struggle with this instrument first of all because it is bigger than normal and noticeably heavier.
Although it has the high E flat and E natural keys the notes above high C do not work even with the best reeds.
If you purchase this instrument be prepared to put extra money into having it repaired so it can be played properly.
