Garmin Instinct Solar
SOLAR CHARGING CAPABILITIES
Based on variable sun exposure, Instinct can provide our best battery life through a solar charging option.
MILITARY STANDARD 810
Instinct is built to the U.S. military standard 810 for thermal, shock and water resistance (rated to 100 meters).
View how various settings and sensors impact your watch’s battery life, so you can make battery-extending changes on the fly.
Use preloaded activity profiles for surfing, swimming, running, biking, hiking, rowing, strength and more.
WRIST-BASED HEART RATE
Get estimated heart rate data along with alerts if your heart rate stays too high or too low while you’re at rest. Gauge how hard your heart is working during activities, even underwater.
For altitude acclimation or sleep monitoring, a Pulse Ox sensor uses light beams at your wrist to estimate how well your body is absorbing oxygen. (This is not a medical device and is not intended for use in the diagnosis or monitoring of any medical condition. Pulse Ox not available in all countries.)
Heart rate variability is used to calculate your stress level score, so you can see if you’re having a calm, balanced or stressful day.
BODY BATTERY ENERGY MONITOR
Optimize your body’s energy reserves, using heart rate variability, stress, sleep and other data to gauge when you’re ready to be active or when you may need to rest.
Access multiple global navigation satellite systems (GPS, GLONASS and Galileo) to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone.

Unfortunately I Got it two days before my trip and adding maps was a little above my tech level and didn't have enough time. No matter, as it can still track activities like hiking and show my family I was not in fact eaten by a bear.
However, after diligently reading many reviews about the best solar powered option, I have to say I was pretty bummed to find that no one mentioned the solar power function actually does nothing to support the actual battery life of when using the GPS function. So for three days I did everything I could to get as much sun to this watch as I could. I swear I could have been mistaken for bringing in a falcon for how I attempted to find the best sunning position. Then when I made camp, I turned the watch to battery saving mode and left it in the sun until bed. Then I turned the watch off at night. Despite my efforts, my watch died at 0300 this morning, making it useless pack weight at that point.
The part that absolutely kills me though is that at 0300 am the app sent an alert to my friends and family that my trip had concluded. I WAS STILL ON THE MOUNTAIN FOR 8 HOURS. 8 HOURS!!! Had a real emergency taken place, my family would have no idea and that I think is why I cannot keep this overpriced pedometer.
If you're doing activities that take less than 20 hours, you're probably fine. If you bring an extra battery pack or charging device, also probably fine. At this point for me, hiking season is wrapping up and I'm pretty certain I can find other tracking devices for my short trips that cost me less than $400.
What stands out about the Instinct is that the simplicity of the display removes the need to customize the watch face like other smartwatches do. Customizing watch faces outside of digital vs analog is simply a waste of time for me. On the Instinct, there's a few useful data points/types that can be changed (sunrise/sunset, barometer, batt life to name a few), but beyond that the display is pretty much what you see. If you don't like it, then simply dont get it and move on.
Watch navigation/selection using just buttons is super simple and convenient because most other smart watches (including Apple Watch) requires you to tap/swipe/pinch, and most times are prone to false accidental touches, or for those who notice while attempting to navigate on a bike while your watch hand is on the handle, pretty much impossible.
Battery Life - As someone who grew up wearing watches all the time (sleep included), I can't stress how annoying it was to have to take off my apple watch to recharge it every day. One time charge on the instinct gives me 27 days, with continuous heart rate, sleep tracking, and smart notifications. I only turn GPS on when I'm exercising. The solar functionality TBH is not that impressive- Its good to know that I'm getting a little battery life back, but not to the point where I'd feel comfortable traveling without my charger cable.
Smart notifications- its great to know when you're getting a text or call when you're not near your phone. You can customize the alert to be tones, vibration, or both. There's also a scheduled DND functionality so you don't have to remember to turn your watch into DND mode when you sleep.
I've become a fan of this watch over the last 5months of use (I tried to use the Apple Watch 7 for a month but went back to Instinct), and look forward to following how Garmin evolves this series in the future. Great value for your buck.
Its not for everyone, but if you don't need to see pics on the screen, or built-in music, this is pretty dang good watch for outdoor adventure. It won't fit in at any formal events, but it didn't want to be there anyway....
