Sounds great but enclosure rattles

Seems like a solid and well made subwoofer - sounds great! I bought this to replace a blown rock sub from another manufacturers of similar specs which lasted only 1 1/2 summers. Now have one of each. At low to medium level they both sound great but when I turn up the volume the port in the Earthquake Sound speaker begins to rattle loudly. The sound itself is not distorted but the rattle ruins the sound for me. To eliminate it, I had reduce the low frequency output on my EQ. Doesn't sounds as good as it did but it doesn't rattle now. Didn't try to return it because I needed it right away it for a couple of parties.

The Earthquake 10D woofer is a passive woofer, unpowered.

It comes with two five foot long heavy duty speaker cables (i.e. left and right channels). The item description doesn't say this. The installation doc doesn't make clear these are traditional left right inputs.

I connected them to the Bose SA-5 amp in parallel with the Bose 251's, noting polarity. Red is +.

The SA-5 drives the 10D and the 251's perfectly. There is no clipping or other evidence of overload at any volume.

The 10D is a very nice complement to the 251's... it fills in the bottom end quite naturally.

From a distance, it does indeed look like a rock.

Great, for the short period of time that it worked

We bought this four years ago and it worked great for about 2 months. The subwoofer started making cracking sounds and rattling, and eventually just stopped producing sound. I requested a repair, which was granted, but had to pay 60 bucks to ship it cross country. It came back working (they repaired, not replaced), but broke again after approximately two months. I again asked for help, but was told it was out of warranty. They provided some guidance, but there was no recourse for repair.

I opened the subwoofer up and found that pieces on the main board are glued and zip-tied, which isn't crazy, but found one of the pieces was cracked off the main board, despite the glue/epoxy and the zip ties. If I jammed enough plastic straws under the zip tie, the pressure eventually was sufficient for the subwoofer to work consistently...for another two months or so.

I bought the most expensive outdoor subwoofer for the pool on Amazon because I didn't want to cut corners, but of all the outdoor gear I've installed, this is the only one that's disappointed me. I'm writing this review after so much time has passed because I didn't budget to have this replaced anytime soon...and only now have come out to see if I can finally get a subwoofer that lasts for longer than two months at a clip.

Maybe I'm just unlucky and got the one bad one out of the bunch...but for so much money, I would have expected a better quality repair, a replacement, or at least replacement parts that I could buy to fix it myself. This subwoofer sounded awesome when it worked. It added tremendous depth to our outdoor sound. If it didn't break so often, I would be giving it 6 out of 5 stars...but I just can't.

TLDR: Great product when working, but you're taking a risk on overall quality. It may have been better to buy multiple, cheaper outdoor subs and just swapped them out if/when they broke. I put all my eggs in this basket and ended up regretting it.

Worked for a couple of years

Worked and sounded great for 2 years, then died. I have a feeling that the manufacturer knows it isn't built well since they only offer a ridiculous 30-day warranty. If $500 buck sounds good for 2 years of good low-frequency sound in your backyard, I recommend. If you want longer than that, look elsewhere.

Best rock speakers I ever heard

I have had outdoor speakers before they were brand name and I paid a good buck for them, more then these, and they don't even compare. They died on me after a year I quickly got rid of them and found these. Like I said what an upgrade these sound so much better then the other set I will never go back to them. Not even to mention these look like real rocks they blend in so much better like they belong there. The sound it crisp and clear and can be heard in all weather conditions. I recommended this to anyone who wants a good pair of outdoor speakers.
