Quality Craftsmanship since 1866

Over almost a century and a half, Brooks England has grown from a small workshop to a byword in quality craftsmanship. Back in 1865, John Boultbee Brooks left his hometown of Hinckley in Leicestershire.

He headed for Birmingham, where in 1866 he established a business in horse harnesses and general leather goods in Great Charles Street under the name JB Brooks & Co. In 1878, the unfortunate death of Mr Brooks' horse led to a stroke of inspiration. Unable to afford another horse, he borrowed a bicycle in order to commute to work. He found the seat so uncomfortable that he vowed to do something about it.

On 28 October 1882, Mr Brooks filed his first saddle patent. Waddling cyclists everywhere rejoiced and the new product was a roaring success.

Brooks的坐垫似乎被高估了，至少C17比较一般。

大概因为此款坐垫的导轨比较低或者整体比较薄，装上后相应会矮一些；另外这个天然橡胶材质比看起来的质感真是硬很多，非常硬，表面还挺滑。调节几次找到最合适的角度后（不合适超级硌，向上好过向下），因为本身形状的原因使这个很硬的坐垫还算贴合，有一点舒适，但本质还是挺硬，你一定得坐到位才行，稍微移动下还是硌。反正我不认为适合长时间骑行。最后说点别的，装车后淋了雨，全天候没问题。还需要注意的是，这坐垫磨裤子…

Great saddle, but not as wide as you think

Very comfortable for my particular sit bone width. Greatly improved over the C17 I previously used.

My sit bone (or ischial tuberosity) measurement is about 125mm. In theory, the 162mm wide C17 should be wide enough and I rode that for many years. However, the surface of the Cambrium series is not flat and the strong curvature means that much of the width is not usable unless your sitting on the rivet (in which case you're sitting on the stiff outer frame). So while the C17 Carved I had was pretty good, I did want something wider but Brooks had not yet brought out the other variants.

Fast forward to today and the Cambrium is available in both wider and narrower variants, so when I bought a new bike I bought a the C19 Carved. At 184mm, this should be too wide for me. However, again because of the strong curvature it sits like a much smaller saddle (and the curvature also means that my thighs are not rubbing up against the saddle nose). Eyeballing it, I'd say that you could probably comfortably sit up to a 140-145mm sit bone size but as that is not my actual measurement I really can't guarantee that. What I can definitely say is that the C19 has proven to be an excellent fit for my personal geometry and ride comfort feels truly dialed in.

The other notable points are with regards to materials used. In the original Cambriums, the rear part of the frame (cantle plate) is aluminum (and it looks awesome). In the all-weather version, the cantle is plastic. Also, the fabric on the top surface used to be cotton (or organic cotton supposedly), but in the all-weather version the fabric is now nylon. At least when new, this is a little bit tacky to the touch but I hope that this will soon wear off. More to the point, the old cotton covers (at least in the older ones) are prone to fading...my old C17 was a limited edition "faded denim" and over the past few years has faded to a neutral canvas color. Allegedly the black nylon of the all-weather should be fade resistant.

While the Brooks website now lists only the all-weather version of the C19 Carved, the cotton cover/aluminum version is still available on Amazon but at a significantly higher price than the all-weather version. So if the above matters to you, there is an option.

Now that I have over 3000 miles on this saddle, I can give it a proper review. Overall, it's a keeper. It's definitely the most comfortable saddle I have ridden; and I've tried many of them. Everyone who see's it for the first time always comments on how uncomfortable it looks - and they aren't wrong. There is no padding and it looks like very uncomfortable. However supple padding is the last thing I want when sitting on a saddle for 4+ hours at a time. I ride 50/50 between the hoods and drops and it's just as comfortable in either position (I have the seat level with the ground).

I'm sold and I will never ride any other saddle. I've ridden through the hot summer, downpours, snow,freezing temps, and the monotonous indoor trainer. It's perfectly comfortable and I don't get sore at all - even on centuries. I got the carved version but I'm not sure it was 100% necessary. It has held up to the elements well, and doesn't do any damage to my cycling kit.

100% recommended

Edit - over 7000 miles now. This is the only saddle I’d buy.

I’m a bigger guy, being 6’1 and 290. So comfort is most important when riding for me. I picked up the C19 and was nervous because it is hard and not that giving to the touch, that all changes when you sit on it. I have no problems riding with or without bike shorts on this thing. One word of caution I had to set my saddle slightly nose up for maximum comfort as level was uncomfortable. It really does feel like I’m sitting on a hammock.....very comfortable. I had a selle saddle before and that seat was very comfortable as well, but when it got wet it started making noises everytime I sat on it, all weather Brooks solved that.

Feels like the leather version

I was hesitant at first to get this saddle. Wasn't sure it would feel and ride as well as the leather version, which I have on my road bikes and single speeds. I wanted something more waterproof for my mountain bike so I went for it. The only noticeable difference was the "feel" of the material. The leather saddles are a bit slick at first and you have a tendency to slide a bit. The Cambium has a slightly roughened texture on it which keeps you where you need to be. The flex that you get from the leather Brooks has been copied to a T. The feel is uncannily Brooks for certain as you ride. I was trying to concentrate on it while I rode, but quickly forgot several times that I was trying to look for differences. Being made of rubber I have no fear that it's perfect for wet, muddy conditions. If you love your leather Brooks as I do, and you're on the fence about the Cambium let me quell your fears. This is through and through a brooks saddle, acts like a brooks saddle too. I'm sold on it and if I get another bike, when I get another bike, I would not hesitate to buy this saddle again.

I had trusted my butt to the the Standard Cambium seat on my daily commuter for about a year, and was completely satisfied with it, when I started to wonder if my nether bits were suffering long-term effects from my many hours in the saddle. For that reason, I picked this up for my daily rider and shelved the standard one for the gravel bike I'm eyeing up. This feels as good if not a little better than the original, though it took a few rides for me to like it. I should say that I wasn't experiencing discomfort with the solid (original) cambium; this was strictly me playing it safe. Both are fantastic places to rest your bottom.
