FIRST, a note about application since there are diagrams on the box but they’re in Japanese: Don’t listen to the person above who scratched theirs with the application tool. They’re an idiot. The screen protector has a film on the screen side and the outside. Line everything up and get the bubbles out with the tool BEFORE you remove the film that’s protecting the front side. If you’re really slow and careful with your application then you won’t have a single bubble under the screen. There’s an included sticker that can be used for removing dust that you can see stuck on the inside. In order to lift the screen protector back up so you can remove dust, DO NOT USE your nails. That will damage the edges and create a weak point for bubbles to form. Use a bit of packing tape in one of the corners and slowly lift up.
NOW for the product review. I’ve used several paperlike screen protectors to try and make writing on my 4th gen 10.9in iPad Air more natural. Usually you’re either going to get a really rough texture or a really clear picture since the matte coating will ever so slightly blur the screen, never both. That being said, I got the WRITING — ROUGH one which should be the worst for picture clarity, but this definitely has the single best picture considering how textured it is that I’ve ever used. Significantly better than Paperlike’s MicroDot texture or whatever they call it.
HOWEVER, as cool as it is that Elecom offers 4 different “feels” (Drawing Smooth, Drawing Rough, Writing Smooth, Writing Rough) it can be a little hard to determine which one will feel the best to you. Now I’m no graphic designer, I use my iPad to handwrite notes in class and while in meetings at work, so designers I’m sorry I can’t help you (but my instinct says pick Drawing Smooth since the Rough on my version is REALLY rough which I’ll get to in a second). But for everyone out there that’s buying this for the same reason as myself, to better simulate a pen on paper feel for writing notes (btw GoodNotes5 is the best note taking app IMO), I can confidently say that you SHOULD get the WRITING SMOOTH version. I’ve been using the Writing Rough version thinking that this would be the best imitation of pen on paper, but as I mentioned above it’s much rougher than I anticipated. Almost to the point where it feels closer to writing with a Sharpie on rough stock paper, far from the ideal of a smooth gel ballpoint pen.
Honestly, I’m really not happy with the Writing Rough model and I wish Elecom could send me a Writing Smooth model *nudge nudge*, but the quality and clarity is still top notch so I’m going to give it 4 stars. Once this screen protector wears down (and it will, there’s no way it can create this much friction without burning out) then I’ll get the Writing Smooth model, but until then don’t make the mistake that I did and get the Writing Smooth. As for Elecom, great job getting the balance between texture and clarity right, this is a good product it’s just hard to determine which model to get despite all of the good info graphics and explanations you give in your product images.
UPDATE: It’s been a little less than a week, but this week was full of heavier than normal note taking and there are some things I noticed that I wanted to bring up. The first is that the writing texture has improved significantly and feels but smoother and more like pen and paper than before which was something I noted above as not being the case. I’m not sure if it was just that my new Apple Pencil tip or the protector itself needed to be “broken in” but whatever it was the feel is much better. HOWEVER, after only 6 days a noticeable flat spot has formed on the tip of my Apple Pencil due to the friction with this protector. Now I do believe that I apply more writing pressure than what is typical, but it’s not like I’m stabbing the thing so the rate at which this is wearing down my Apple Pencil tip is concerning. So although I mentioned that the textured “feel” of writing on this has improved, I’m going to stick with my original recommendation that you get the Writing - Smooth model simply for the lesser wear you’ll see on your preferred stylus.
