Disappointing

First of all, I'm a big Samsung fan. I have owned 5 Samsung Galaxy phones since the beginning. However, this highly anticipated S22 is a huge disappointment. If you look at the specification, you can see this phone is significantly inferior to the S20 series (the model that was released 2 years ago).

Here are the spec downgrades I noticed (comparing S20 to S22):
1. Screen Resolution dropped from QHD (3200 x 1440) to FHD (2340 x 1080)
2. S22/S22+ Ram dropped from 12GB to 8 GB
3. MicroSD slot is removed
4. Pressure testing shows that the new CPU Snapdragon 8 Gen 1's performance is worse than Apple's A13 Chip (The one that's in iPhone 11 - the 2019 model). What's worse, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1's performance is also more unstable than last year's Snapdragon 888's performance.
5. The screen has downgraded from curved screen to flat screen
6. Screen size shrunk from S20's 6.2" display to S22's 6.1" display
7. No charger included
8. No headset included

I undertand Samsung wants to make more money, and I am very disappointed that's what Samsung decided to do - significantly downgrading it's flagship devices, while still selling at a premium price. No wonder the sales of the Samsung's S series has been down over the past two years. Hope they wake up soon.

I got this phone yesterday and immediately spent hours getting it set up to my liking. I'm not a fan of Samsung software, but the hardware is really good. This phone is the perfect size for me personally. I dislike big phones and got this to replace the Pixel 6. Speaking of the P6, the fingerprint reader on the S22 runs laps around the P6. Performance has been as expected and battery life will take several days to steady. I was able to remove or hide all the Samsung apps and replace them with the ones I prefer and make this as close to a Samsung Pixel as possible.

I have been using this phone for a few months now so I thought I'd update it:
It IS a very nicely built phone and the antenna and modem are great. I get mmWave and have gotten up to 4 Gigabits of speed! C-band is really spotty in my area but I get that too. My biggest issue now is that the phone gets pretty hot when I use a wireless charger or if I'm using it outside. Granted, I am in a hot climate but my old phone didn't get this warm if it's just a little sunny. In the car, I have to have the AC on it.

The battery life...well , yeah it does stink but it will get you through your day. I think part of the issue is that I'm with Verizon and they don't have standalone 5G so often, I'm connected to two different bands. Hopefully that will get better in time.

Original Review:
I'm a Google guy and have mostly owned Nexus and Pixel phones. I've never been a Samsung fan because of all the extra junkware they add to the phones and how they create duplicate versions of perfectly good Android apps instead of just using the native apps. I've always loved Samsung's hardware but the software has been why I've chosen Google's phones.

In the past, google's phones all used the Snapdragon chips and while they may have not been the fastest or slickest looking phones, more than held their own on hardware and blew Samsung out of the water with their software. That's why I was very excited to wait for the Pixel 6 because the Pixel 6 was going to be my 5G phone. Then I found out that I couldn't get an unlocked Pixel 6 that had mmWave 5G and I'd have to get the Pro. Fine, even though it would be a giant phone. But then all the problems of the P6 came to light - signal issues, disconnecting, finger print reader, and bug after bug with delayed updates.

That's when I decided to wait for the S22. I've only had it for a short time but I am very impressed by how great the phone feels. The Pixel6 just looked boxy and cheap. The S22 looks very polished. The modem /antenna on it also are very strong. Even in spots where my old phone had trouble, the s22 gives me an extra bar and makes a huge difference. The 5G modem is also great. I've been able to connect to mmWave, but I don't think C band is deployed in my area yet. Battery life is not great but for a phone this size, it's more than adequate and will last you a whole work day if by chance you live in an area without any outlets and haven't yet figured out that they sell these portable battery packs. Really, try them, it's an amazing invention.

The software...well, it's still a Samsung so there is lots of bloatware that you can't delete. I wish it wasn't so, but it is. It took me about 3 hours to de-Samsung the phone - put in google's autofill/password manager, put in google calendar, etc. I will say that Samsung's apps do sync up really well with Google, but I still prefer google's native apps.

If there is one complaint I have, it would be the finger print reader. Why oh why do they have it on screen? I have a tempered glass protector so perhaps that's causing it to not register half the time, but then they should expect people to put a screen protector on.

Overall, don't listen to the nay-sayers who haven't even bought the phone going off on their soap box about a headphone jack and SD card reader. Those days are gone as the floppy drives are. This is a great phone if you can put up with Samsung's software. Maybe one day I'll go back to the pixel, but overall, I feel good about this purchase.

*update*
After a month of use, I love this phone and have gotten it to be almost like a Pixel. The modem/antenna on this phone are amazing. I pick up Verizon mmWave 5G from a moving vehicle where they have antennas in the streets. Low/mid-band 5G and LTE get slightly better connections than my old phone too. This phone has great hardware.

Some things I did to make this more of a google type of phone:
Replaced the Samsung keyboard with Google's Gboard ...bigger buttons, better placement.
Replaced contacts, calendar, and dialer to google
Replaced auto-complete passwords to google

I wish I could delete some of the Samsung versions but when they are not the default, they just sit and don't mess things up.
